I stumbled on this article about a design firm that sent it's holiday card over the internet, in 2000:
For 10 years, Karen Spencer's graphic design firm, Karen Spencer Design of Armonk, has printed holiday greeting cards to send to its clients. This year, however, the firm of five is trying something new.

Clients as diverse as I.B.M. and Bloomingdale's will receive an electronic card this year. The firm will send nearly 1,000 cards via e-mail.
Charming, isn't it? See the article here.

methinks the old gray lady was a little behind the curve on this "news" piece given ecards burst on the scene in 95 and Flash was at version 5 by 2000.

To send a holiday card, something that's usually PAPER, over the INTERNET. Man that's not just news, that's a revolution.

Also, it's a pretty tiny piece used to fill up an empty space - probably just a barely rewritten press release.

You know how everyone says the midwest gets trends about 2 years after they hit the coasts? I'm proposing that the idea of the eCard didn't hit NY for some 5 years after it was big in the midwest -- thus, newsworthy in the NY Times. Take that New York!
