What does this have to do with Dairy Milk?

It makes you happy and smile - like chocolate.

Umm, with the song that was chosen for the commercial, I would say it is not a song that makes me happy or makes me smile. That's an angry, bitter song.

Blogger Paul said,

i think it's the whole gorilla getting a-little-too into playing the drums to a slow song.

But also, chocolate is a comfort food for bad times, so maybe the song symbolizes hardship. the gorilla symbolizes chocolate. and the drumming symbolizes how chocolate makes sad times bearable.

i think it's the latter.

Blogger Paul said,

it's a gorilla making the best of a sad situation. like "this song is sad, but i'm gonna make the best of it and just ROCK!"

and the tag line is 'glass and a half full'. so you can look at the song in a "glass half empty" way and say it's and angry bitter song. or you can think in a 'glass and a half full' way and say 'yeah, the drum parts ROCK!"

and chocolate is the catalyst to this thinking, vis a vis chocolate = gorilla.

Blogger Paul said,

pretty sure i misused vis a vis there.

ERGO! i meant ergo. i got my pompous synonyms-i-learned-from-the-second-matrix-movie confused.

I think this commercial is trying to say, "Phil Collins is a monkey. Shut up and drink your chocolate milk."

The drum beat is trickier than it looks. Mr. Gorilla keeps time with his left foot on the high hat (cymbal bouncing on his left) while doing a syncopated beat with his right foot on the bass drum. You have to be skilled with you legs.
