crisises are not opportunities, they just suck
I've the hearing (in the media mostly) that "the chinese symbol for crisis is the same as the symbol for opportunity." i think the colbert report even said this. I've never really believed it, so today - as i avoid doing work - i looked it up. And.... they are not the same word, at least not according to Victor H. Mair,professor of Chinese language and literature at the University of Pennsylvania. I found this essay, here's a little exerpt from it:
Those who purvey the doctrine that the Chinese word for "crisis" is composed of elements meaning "danger" and "opportunity" are engaging in a type of muddled thinking that is a danger to society, for it lulls people into welcoming crises as unstable situations from which they can benefit. Adopting a feel-good attitude toward adversity may not be the most rational, realistic approach to its solution.
