So, i know that some of you (Dan, other 'readers') are proponents of reading pitchfork reviews in favor of just looking at the numerical rating and making a purchase. I have decided that i prefer an different method. I find music in the 6.5-8.5 range that sounds interesting from its little paragraph. Then I listen to it a handful of times, and devise my own review/understanding of it, and then go back and read he review to see how my musical intuitions match up to 'professional' opinion.

It's kinda fun. Sometimes the reviews can ruin/predispose you to certain aspects of the music. And also, the reviews can be a lot more meaningful when you know what they're discussing.

uh, you pretty much just described how i interact with pitchfork.

minus the "Devising my own review" and "going back and reading it" silliness... i either like it or i dont. and it goes in to rotation... or it doesnt.

I will throw my two cents in as I usually do about music: Reviews mean little to nothing. I will read a review to get an idea of the style or genre the group borrows from and that's it. All the rest is subjective opinion. Each reviewer has their own bias you have to wade through, so keep that in mind when reading. For example, MAXIMUMROCKANDROLL would not give a fair review to a band like the Decemberists. My guess is that Pitchfork would not give a fair review to Slayer.

ITS ALL ABOUT WHAT YOU LIKE.
